Harness Guide

What Is a 5 Point UTV Harness?

A 5 Point harness uses two shoulder straps, two lap belts and a fifth anti-submarine strap that attaches below the buckle. The additional strap helps keep the lap portion of the harness properly positioned while providing another point of restraint.

Five-point harnesses are commonly used in high-performance UTVs, race-inspired builds and machines used for aggressive trail, dune, desert and rock riding.

Common Questions

5 Point UTV Harness FAQ

Choosing the right restraint system depends on your UTV, riding style and how the vehicle is used. Here are answers to some of the most common questions.

What is the difference between a 4 Point and 5 Point harness?
A 4 Point harness uses two shoulder straps and two lap belts. A 5 Point harness adds a fifth anti-submarine strap that attaches below the buckle, providing an additional restraint point.
What is the fifth strap for?
The fifth strap is commonly called an anti-submarine strap. It helps keep the lap belt positioned properly and helps reduce forward movement underneath the lap portion of the harness.
What does SFI mean on a racing harness?
SFI refers to the SFI Foundation, which publishes performance specifications for motorsports safety equipment. Harnesses carrying the applicable SFI certification are manufactured and tested to meet the requirements of that specification.
Do I need an SFI harness?
Recreational riders generally do not need an SFI-certified harness unless a racing organization or event requires one. If you compete, check the current rulebook for the sanctioning body or race series before choosing a harness.
Do I need a harness bar?
Many UTV installations use a harness bar for the shoulder straps, but some cages and vehicles already provide suitable mounting locations. The correct installation depends on the vehicle, seat, cage and harness configuration.
What UTVs can use a 5 Point harness?
Five-point harnesses are commonly installed in Polaris RZR, Can-Am Maverick X3 and Maverick R, Yamaha YXZ1000R, Kawasaki KRX 1000, Honda Talon and many other side-by-sides with appropriate mounting points.
