SFI Racing Harness FAQ

SFI-certified harnesses are designed for sanctioned racing and must meet specific safety standards set by the SFI Foundation.

UTV and off-road harnesses (non-SFI) are designed for recreational use such as trail riding, dunes, and desert driving.

Key differences

  • Certification: SFI harnesses are certified to a specific SFI standard and include a dated certification tag; non-SFI harnesses are not certified.
  • Construction: SFI harnesses use fully separate shoulder and lap belts connected at the latch & link; non-SFI harnesses use sewn-together shoulder and lap belts.
  • Expiration: SFI harnesses have a limited service life (commonly two years); non-SFI harnesses do not have a certification expiration.
  • Comfort: Non-SFI harnesses typically prioritize comfort and ease of adjustment; SFI harnesses prioritize compliance and strength.
  • Use case: SFI harnesses are required for many racing series; non-SFI harnesses are intended for recreational off-road use.

If you are not racing in a sanctioned series, a regular off-road harness is often the more comfortable and practical choice.

You only need an SFI-certified harness if you are competing in a sanctioned racing series that requires it.

Many off-road racing organizations specify SFI-certified restraints—often SFI 16.1 or 16.5—depending on vehicle speed, belt width, and whether a head and neck restraint is used.

For recreational off-road use such as trail riding, dunes, desert runs, and non-sanctioned events, an SFI-certified harness is typically not required.

If you plan to race, always verify the current harness requirements with your specific sanctioning body, as rules can change.

If you do not need an SFI-certified harness, our non-SFI options are often a better choice for recreational off-road use.

SFI Certification

This harness is certified to SFI 16.1 by the SFI Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 1978 that develops and administers safety standards for motorsports and racing equipment.

SFI 16.1 certification verifies compliance with specific requirements for:

  • Webbing strength and durability
  • Stitching and construction methods
  • Hardware and adjuster performance
  • Proper belt geometry for 4-point and 5-point systems

During certification, controlled loads are applied to the lap belts, shoulder belts, and complete harness assembly to verify performance under impact forces.

SFI-certified harnesses use fully separate shoulder and lap belts that connect at the latch & link, as required for certification and competition use.

SFI tag and expiration

SFI-certified equipment includes an official SFI certification tag sewn onto the product. The tag identifies the SFI specification and shows the date of manufacture.

SFI certifications are valid for a limited time. Most sanctioning bodies require the harness to be within two years of the manufacture date to remain legal for competition.

Buyer Responsibility

UTV & Off-Road Harness FAQ

No. This harness is not SFI certified. SFI certification is a racing-specific safety standard required for professional or sanctioned competition.

For normal off-road use—such as trail riding, dunes, and desert runs—an SFI-rated harness is not required. Elite and Pro Series harnesses are built from high-strength webbing and durable hardware that handle aggressive off-road driving while providing better comfort and easier adjustment than race-legal setups.

Elite and Pro Series harnesses use sewn-together shoulder straps and lap belts, creating a single integrated harness assembly.

This design simplifies installation, reduces loose components, and provides a more comfortable, stable fit for recreational off-road driving.

Yes. This harness bolts directly into Polaris RZR models using the factory seat belt mounting points—no harness bar required.

Compatible models include RZR 570, 800, S 900, XP 900, XP 1000, Pro XP, Turbo, Turbo S, Turbo R, Pro R, and RS1.

Four bolts with nuts are also included for universal mounting in other off-road applications.

Yes. This harness fits most Can-Am Maverick, Kawasaki Teryx, Yamaha YXZ, Honda Talon, and Arctic Cat Wildcat models. It can also be installed in sand rails, Jeeps, and other off-road builds.
